SANFORD, N.C. — They arrived ahead of everyone else, and the town has already taken notice.
Two of the most decorated champions in Random Cup history — three jackets apiece, six between them — have come down early ahead of Championship week to headline an exclusive showcase exhibition at Carolina Trace Country Club, the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr design regarded as one of the most dramatic and demanding tracks in the Carolinas. The event tees off Tuesday.
The venue was chosen deliberately. A RTJ masterpiece in the community, Carolina Trace was built to test — and, on the right afternoon, to showcase — the very kind of generational talent the Random Cup has spent fourteen years cultivating. "You don't put ordinary players on a Jones course," one official noted. "You put legends on it, and you let the world watch."
But the golf, it seems, is only part of the itinerary. Rumors have circulated since the champions' arrival that the pairing is scheduled to dine Monday evening with a number of, as one source carefully put it, "high-ranking people" — a meeting the Committee has declined to confirm, deny, or characterize in any way. Who these individuals are, and what business might be discussed over dinner the night before a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, remains the subject of considerable speculation. The champions, for their part, have said nothing. They rarely do.
For those hoping to witness the showcase itself, a limited number of ticketing packages remain:
Playing Alongside the Champions — an inside-the-ropes playing experience with the legends themselves. Extremely limited.
Inside the Ropes (Walking) — walk with the champions' group, close enough to hear the reads, the wagers, and the trash talk.
General Admission — access to the grounds and the gallery.
Pricing is available upon inquiry. The Committee advises, however, that if you have to ask the cost, you probably cannot afford it — and that your best and most economical option is to follow the action live via the official Random Cup social channels.
