COMMITTEE ADDRESSES OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP SPECULATION: No Automatic Bid for Ryan Fox

PINEHURST, N.C. — In response to mounting public speculation, the Random Cup Selections Committee has issued a formal statement confirming that Open Championship winner Ryan Fox will not receive an automatic bid into the 2026 Random Cup.

The Committee wishes to be clear that it holds Mr. Fox and his accomplishment in the highest regard. "The Open Championship is a fine event, and Mr. Fox is plainly a talented golfer," a spokesperson said. "But the Random Cup is not in the business of handing out invitations on the strength of a résumé built elsewhere. A Claret Jug is a lovely thing. It is not a Random Cup application."

The Committee reminded the public that entry into the Championship is determined by a process it declined to describe, weighted by criteria it declined to disclose, and overseen by a body that answers to no one. Winning golf's oldest major, sources confirmed, moves the needle less than one might assume. "Every year we receive interest from accomplished players who believe their trophies speak for themselves," the spokesperson added. "They are welcome to apply like everyone else."

Pressed on whether an Open champion might at least warrant expedited review, the Committee responded that Mr. Fox's application would be given the same careful consideration afforded all hopefuls, before confirming that it had, in fact, already been denied. A copy of the decision — stamped, and addressed warmly to "Scooter" — has reportedly been dispatched.

The Committee thanked Mr. Fox for his interest, wished him continued success at the sport's lesser events, and reminded all prospective applicants that the standards of the Random Cup remain, as ever, gloriously and immovably its own.
